Telluride makes the perfect base camp for hiking the Lizard Head Wilderness Area southwest of town. The Lizard Head is a 400 foot spire, of volcanic rock with a height of 400 feet (elevation 13,113 feet high). The Navajo Basin, headwaters of the West Dolores River, is a long glacial bowl surrounded with 13,000 foot ridges and Mount Wilson (14,017 feet high), El Diente (14,156 feet high) and Wilson Peak (14,246 feet high). Navajo Lake is a popular hiking and backpacking destination.
