One of the river fords for the Old Spanish Trail, Santa Fe to the Los Angeles area in Southern California. The LDS Church established the short lived Elk Mountain Mission in April 1855, only to abandon the settlement due to Indian conflict within months. It took twenty years for new settlers with a permanent settlement established in 1878. Moab incorporates as a town on December 20, 1902.
