The La Garita Mountains are home to San Luis Peak, at 14,022 feet of elevation. San Luis is the highest peak in the La Garita Wilderness Area. The La Garita’s are a sub-range of the San Juan Mountains, located to the east of the main range. San Luis Peak’s challenge lies in access, being two hours hike from the nearest paved road. Categorized as a Class 1 climb, best suited for July or August.
In addition to San Luis Peak, this Wilderness Area has several 13ers, including: Stewart Peak, Phoenix Peak, Organ Mountain, La Garita Peak, and Baldy Alto.
