The Ute name Paghosa has been translated as Pah gosah as “healing waters.” The municipality of Pahgosa Springs (elevation 7,126 feet) is the only town in Archuleta County in Southern Colorado, of which 65% is either national forrest, wilderness area, or the land of the Southern Ute Indians. The “Mother Spring” at 144 degrees F, has a measured depth of 1,002 feet on August 20, 2011, and is thought to be the deepest geothermal hotsping in the world. Recreation includes, winter downhill and cross country skiing at Wolf Creek Ski Area (east of Wolf Creek Pass), snowshoeing, snowmobiling, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, fishing, camping, paddling and hunting.
