Monarch Mountain is located on the eastern side of the divide on Highway 50, several miles below the crest of Monarch Pass. Monarch was one of the early ski areas in Colorado opening in 1939 with a rope tow running up the infamous Gunbarrel run, a long, steep, heavily moguled run.
