Located near the Flat Tops Wilderness Area, the Rifle Ranger District supports year around outdoor adventure. The White River National Forest was created in 1891, named as the White River Plateau Timber Reserve, only the second timber reserve created as a reserve. In the National Forest there are 8 Wilderness Areas, 11 ski resorts, 4 major reservoirs, 10 peaks higher than 14,000 feet, numerous peaks at 13,000 feet, and 2,500 miles of trails.
