Prospectors arrived in the San Juan’s around 1875, looking for silver and gold, Ouray boomed within two years with a population of over one thousand. Rich in ore, the Camp Bird Mine produced over one million ounces of gold by 1916. Today, Ouray is known as the “Switzerland of America” for it’s location at the end of a narrow valley surrounded with high mountain peaks.

Today, Ouray makes the perfect base camp for ice climbing, hiking, exploring wilderness areas, mountain biking, and climbing. Ouray is the perfect place to resupply, enjoy excellent local cuisine, and even soak in one of the many local hot springs.
