Aspen sits in the Roaring Fork Valley in West Central Colorado. Part of Colorado’s Silver Boom, and named for the large number of aspen trees that miners found in the area, the Aspen ski area was founded in 1946. The original area comprised of 673 acres. Today, Aspen consists of 5,300 acres between Snowmass, Aspen Mountain or Ajax Mountain, Aspen Highlands, and Buttermilk.
